First Day Hike

McCook Neb. — If you’re feeling a little sluggish after the holidays and wondering how to properly welcome 2026… may I suggest: a walk in the woods with your neighbors?

This afternoon, Red Willow State Recreation Area is hosting its annual First Day Hike, and it’s one of those simple, quietly wonderful traditions that keeps growing every year.

We’ll meet at Willow View Campground, Site #48 at 2:26 p.m. and head out for a 1.39-mile easy-to-moderate hike along the Archery Range Trail. There are a few hills, some flatter stretches, and a pretty good chance you’ll spot deer or winter songbirds along the way. Kids are welcome, dogs are welcome (just keep them on a 6-foot leash), and no one cares how fast you walk.

If the hike itself isn’t enough motivation, there will also be random prize drawings for those who attend — including a free night of camping, a Nebraska state park sticker, and a NebraskaLand magazine subscription.

There’s no cost and no registration. The only requirement is a 2026 Nebraska state park vehicle permit, which you can purchase at the park entrance.

So if you’re looking for a low-pressure, feel-good way to start the new year — fresh air, friendly faces, and a little movement — this is a pretty great place to begin.
