McCOOK Neb. — Every January 6, families across Mexico and Latin America celebrate Día de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day) with a special bread called Rosca de Reyes — and thanks to Miguel and Mayra Camacho, owners of Carnicería CB, this beautiful cultural tradition is now part of the McCook community.
The Rosca de Reyes traces its roots back to ancient Roman Saturnalia celebrations, later evolving through medieval Spain and France before arriving in Mexico during the Spanish conquest. Over time, it became deeply woven into Mexican family life, growing especially popular in the 1930s and 1940s as Spanish families migrated during the Spanish Civil War.
Each Rosca carries deep symbolism:
The crown shape represents the Three Wise Men and the journey taken to protect baby Jesus from King Herod.
The candied fruits symbolize the jewels of the crown and the dangers faced along the way.
The hidden figurine represents baby Jesus in hiding. Whoever finds it becomes the padrino or madrina and agrees to host a tamale gathering on February 2 — Día de la Candelaria (Candlemas Day).
Miguel and Mayra confirmed that customers can also order tamales from Carnicería CB for Candlemas celebrations.
“Yes, you can order your tamales with us. We are known for our authentic Mexican food — we prepare everything the same way we would at home,” they shared.
The Camachos opened Carnicería CB in 2019, building their small family business with deep gratitude for the community.
“Our small family business started in 2019, and thanks to God and to the community that has welcomed us, we continue working every day to improve.”
They recently shared a New Year’s message thanking customers for their continued encouragement.
“Without all of you, it wouldn’t be possible. Thank you so much. We appreciate you very much.”
And before trying Rosca de Reyes for the first time, Miguel and Mayra offer one simple piece of advice:
“Prepare a delicious hot chocolate to enjoy it with.”
